The authors (Formisano & Kutolowski) position themselves against Hofstadter, Davis, who analogized Antimasonry to McCarthyism & right-wing populism. I'd wager that if Hofstadter's stance was shaped by McCarthyism, F&K were shaped by Vietnam & Watergate (article pub'd in 1977)

both-sidesism, 1826-style: on the one hand, abduction, murder, and the obstruction of justice are bad; on the other hand, spreading conspiracy theories about those things is bad

This scholarly article makes the case that the simplest explanation for the ascendancy of Antimasonry in the 1820s was... the Masons were doing some pretty bad stuff!
