all I mean is Dems only recently embraced gun safety as a real organizing issue and there's little evidence it's been a loser for them in post-Obama era

My guess is it still is a loser issue, but I don't say that with a massive amount of confidence. I don't mean that in a bad way though - most issues are "losers" but the whole point of acquiring political capital is to spend it on something.

I agree it's getting easier. (All of my beliefs here are held with low confidence though; issue polling is really tough)
