The high resolution Ken Burns 3D Colab notebook I linked earlier didn't quite work, this one is ready to go:

The Bavarian city of Nördlingen is maybe the only town in the world built using materials of extraterrestrial origin. Parts of a large meteorite that formed the crater it sits in was used for building the city walls, town houses, churches, etc.

Planck won the Nobel for discovering quanta of energy. By assuming the energy of light of a certain frequency could only come in discrete steps, he figured out how much light of each frequency you see in a hot furnace. Wild hair. But he was not a revolutionary. (1/n)

This could be your city but your government doesn’t want to build anything❗️

Scientific discovery twitter is great! Here's the first human to see a particular giant exploding star, a star which supernova'ed while giant dinosaurs still roamed the earth. The light of the explosion is reaching us now, 100 million years later!

A barista once told me she liked people who order decaf because "you know they're the ones who really like the taste of coffee for coffee's sake" I love this kind of thing, a tiny viewquake from someone thoughtful, delivered with no fanfare during the minutiae of everyday life

“Interior design” as a profession feels so divorced from its actual purpose: creating spaces that people actually enjoy spending time in, that don’t induce stress and tension, & that suit the purpose of the moment -thoughts from a hellish waiting room w/ poor circulation

In Nov 1960, T. S. Eliot wrote a statement which he wished to be made public when the collection of his letters to Emily Hale at Princeton were opened to the public. The statement & covering letter to his executors are made public for the first time today:

I’m sometimes envious of people who lived through high growth periods. If you think things are changing too fast at 2% growth, imagine what 10-15% must feel like

This 50-year retrospective on the progress in science from 1857-1907 makes a compelling case that America’s true golden age was earlier than we usually peg it (also note how simple and clear the writing is!)

It is odd to realize as many years have passed since 2000 as from 1980 to 2000 1980 - 2000 felt like a period of huge changes, but the last 20 years hasn’t felt all that different Perhaps it is an age thing.

Loving this thread because it describes the exact opposite of me, and it explains why I felt so tortured as a student in school. I obsessed about what and why, and am comfortable loremipsum-ing the how It also explains why I found the military *less* agonising than school 🤔

It's remarkable how much one can achieve with a small group of highly motivated people, and how little with a large group of people who don't care.

“SF proposed a new bus lane on Van Ness in 2001. Its opening was recently delayed to 2021, yielding a project duration of around 7,300 days. The project will cost $100,000 per meter. The Alaska Highway, constructed across remote tundra, cost $793 per meter in 2019 dollars.”

Georg Janny (1864 - 1935) was an Austrian landscape painter and set designer for opera and theatre. You can tell how well he understands the concept of space and place, stage and set. Anyone of these would serve wonderfully as a model for a new neighborhood.
