    "The Starry Night" was one in a series of night paintings Van Gogh completed in 1888-89. The idea of painting at night without artificial light was risky but Vincent was not afraid of a challenge. In some cases he lit candles and placed them on the rim of his hat for visibility.

    and shared a heritage that stamped their painting as unmistakably Dutch. They both exalted in the texturally implied light & shadow. Van Gogh borrowed heavily from Rembrandt's heavy application of paint and powerful contrasting effects- but made it his own .

    came from a prestigious family that included an uncle who was Vice-Admiral of the Dutch Navy. Another uncle also (named Vincent Van Gogh) founded one of the most successful art dealerships in Europe. He came from a line of scholars, pastors, craftsmen and theologians.

    It is a myth that sold only 1 painting in his lifetime he actually sold several works and engaged in numerous trades with fellow artists and paid for art commissions. Van Gogh's uncle owned major art galleries and trained both Vincent and his brother Theo to sell art.

    was enthralled by harvest fields turning ochre, yellow and bronze - here are two examples created in Arles between 1888-90. The notion of the field as a harbinger of time was ever on Vincent's mind and a ripened field signified the outcome of a productive life for him.

    's iconic Irises (now in the permanent collection of the Getty Museum) was painted in the San Remy Asylum central courtyard while Vincent was in recovery. To this day flowers grow in the grounds and gardens of the San Remy facility creating a calm restorative atmosphere.

    Often with what one responds to is his use of glowing yellow conveyed as light from a sunflower or radiant sky. Color has the power to evoke emotion especially when conjoined with a natural source or reference point. Van Gogh was surely one of art's greatest colorists!
