I helped define these protocols so I have MANY critiques. I do not think server-choice is one of them. The focus on having smaller, well-moderated "instances" is good primarily due to scoping moderation. We do need better moderation federation. (sharing block lists/reputations)

When picking a Mastodon/Pleroma/etc server you are picking your home AND picking your *moderation staff*, which is great! You can talk to anybody. Violent servers find it difficult to talk to you. You can move servers as you find a better home. Then, it is mostly like it is here.

More annoying with regard to media reporting on for-profit federation of social media... nobody points out it is already done!! what is the point of journalism if you don't research your topic. bonkers.

It is annoying Jack Dorsey can just rename concepts in existing federated protocols/schemas and profit off of pretending to come up with federated social media then build it with preexisting wealth. It took years to develop both open web specs and FOSS software at our own cost!

the fallacy of the free speech arguments on social networks is considering who is banned more than who is actually terrified to the point of silence. mostly because only one group is actually visible.

I get into arguments with folks who say "nothing should be banned on social networks!" because it is apparently hard for those folks to understand hate speech is about keeping folks silent. People get pushed away from your platform and that's also silencing. You have to pick one.

Again, if somebody says they have created a "free speech" social network where everyone is free to say whatever they want... they are a grifter. Building that is impossible.
