It’s fairly routine - probably even prudent - for media to seek comment from all relevant parties prior to publication. This schedule might just be so that relevant people know schedule by which they must respond/comment if they want their side in the piece.

Comments about the content would be prudent. The scheduled release dates aren't the content. And when the story will run in your publication and needing a comment before that is deadline enough. What the NYT did had nothing to do w/ responsible journalism.
