Let's first be sure he did not cancel his flight (or insured himself for missing it), because as of yet, what assurance does anyone have he's not offline on purpose? Was he alone?

He missed important meetings, also meeting organised by himself. As a person who knows/have met him, this is highly unlikely for him. He had an plane ticket, but his seat remained empty
