That study is a key reason why Gerald Reaven, “the father of insulin resistance”, did not believe elevated insulin causes obesity.

The paper concludes: “wide variations in insulin resistance and plasma insulin concentration had little, if any, effect on predicting weight gain in healthy, nonobese volunteers”.

This finding shows that people gain different amounts of weight in middle age, but insulin secretion doesn’t predict who will gain weight and who won’t.

Despite large differences in weight gain between individuals, weight gain over 14 years did not differ significantly between insulin groups. See graph below, with error bars representing standard deviation. They sliced and diced the data in several ways, always finding the same.

They divided the volunteers into four groups based on insulin responses. Insulin varied six-fold between groups, from 18 to 106 microU/mL. Then they waited 14 years to see how much weight each person gained.

His team recruited 647 factory workers whose average age was 41 years old, without obesity or diagnosed disease, and measured each person's insulin response to a beverage containing 75 grams of glucose.

Reaven's team conducted a compelling study on this question, concluding that post-meal insulin secretion is unrelated to middle-age weight gain. Let's dig in.

Gerald Reaven was an accomplished physiology researcher whose work was instrumental in understanding insulin resistance. He argued that insulin resistance is a key driver of chronic disease. I'm going to explain why he didn't believe elevated insulin causes obesity.

New preprint! Mitchell Schijen, , and I compared the rate of "positive" results (i.e., confirmed hypotheses) in Registered Reports to a sample of standard (non-RR) papers in psychology. We found a *very* large difference. Thread... 1/

Potatoes contain high-quality protein. This was first demonstrated over a century ago, in long-term human feeding studies I describe here.

What’s so difficult to grasp about the fact that hunger and satiety are signals generated deep in primitive parts of our brain, that their intensity varies between people, largely on a genetic basis, and that this variation strongly predisposes people towards leanness or obesity?

Twitter friends: I'm looking for high-quality books on low-carb and/or keto diets for weight loss. Books that are considered evidence-based. Ideally, popular as well. Suggestions?

Is fruit fattening? Lots of strong opinions, but what does the evidence say? In this interview with Dan Pardi for HumanOS Radio, we discuss my recent systematic review paper on this.

🤔 Does fruit help you stay lean? 🍬 Or is it really just "nature's candy?" 🍓 Check out our interview with to learn what the research says about the impact of fruit on energy intake and adiposity.

This isn't about whose opinions on red meat are right or wrong. It's about the integrity of the scientific method. I hope THI can find a better path forward.
