Actually it was "nRF51 series" at first, but then they released "nRF52 series", and named the product family "nRF5 series"
-
I was really confused that nRF51 wasn't the 8051 powered family See also: Nuvoton's M051 family, which is Cortex-M0 (their 8051s are variously Wxx, N76, MS51... Really consistent naming here)

i always thought, they called it nRF5, because they were expecting the Bluetooth 5 spec to be finalized and to support it outright. Eventually that happened, but not in time for the first nRF5 MPUs.
