One of the things I like about Metcal: this can’t ever, ever happen. The Curie temperature can’t suddenly just change due to a bug.

sure. I'm not using Metcals for two reasons; first, cost, and second, I work with leaded boards on old substrates that delaminate at the slightest inclination at lead-free temps

I really feel like this should be part of the the tetris game on the firmware. More lines you stack up without completing the hotter the tip gets until finally the iron just melts itself.
