good news: the upstream fixed the crash very promptly bad news: turns out the crash was hiding a bug in the temperature calculation code, so I got to witness a soldering iron tip glowing bright cherry redhttps://twitter.com/whitequark/status/1218080895808176128 …

the bug exhibits itself when the temperature gets above exactly 420°C and can be summarized as "the iron becomes extremely high [temperature]"; I think it got to around 700°C because (a) glowing cherry red and (b) the stainless steel started sugaringhttps://github.com/Ralim/ts100/issues/556 …

One of the things I like about Metcal: this can’t ever, ever happen. The Curie temperature can’t suddenly just change due to a bug.

sure. I'm not using Metcals for two reasons; first, cost, and second, I work with leaded boards on old substrates that delaminate at the slightest inclination at lead-free temps

I really feel like this should be part of the the tetris game on the firmware. More lines you stack up without completing the hotter the tip gets until finally the iron just melts itself.

So firmware update 2020-01-19.4 will consist of... a fire-extinguisher?
