i desoldered this flash a while back to map out the testpoints (https://lab.whitequark.org/notes/2018-09-17/game-boy-advance-cartridge-smc805-2/ …) and i just reballed it and soldered it back and it worked basically the first time. (i had to heat it up the second time because my flux gel is a very gnarly, very not bga ooze)pic.twitter.com/qL3EGPBAGF

until now, the only thing that prevented me from disassembling and reverse-engineering literally everything i meet was that i couldn't put anything with bgas back. now... now i am unstoppable!! INFINITE POWER HAHAHA

dead phone and i need data? get new phone, swap the flash. have a laptop and don't want to bother binwalking bios update? desolder the flash and read it. don't know where the testpoints lead? i can just take off every large ic on the motherboard no big deal incredible

it isn't cost effective to mail it to me but you could bring it to any phone/laptop repair folks or do it yourself! i believe in you

I'm not sure I'm quite to BGA levels yet, but thank you for your faith! Perhaps someday. :D

i literally watched one 20 minute tutorial on youtube and got it working the first time. i'm not even that good at soldering and my hands shake

I learned a while back that alcohol is literally a performance enhancing drug for soldering tiny things and fixing hand shakiness. The trick is to put down the work after the soldering is done and not apply any power till you've sobered up.

lol. in my case, alcohol only makes me less near-sighted... which is actually a substantial issue with soldering and why I won't get LASIK. i don't get literally any other effects. i don't get dumber or like more aggressive or less shy or anything

i mean, i imagine my reaction time slows down enough that i won't attempt to drive obviously, but i have never actually noticed it, not even in first-person shooters

Huh. I'd be curious about doing accerometer measured steadiness tests. For me, 3 shots, 30 minutes, is a recipe for "can successfully solder two sizes smaller when using the microscope"

Granted, it's probably overmedicating, I'm not a small person, and the effect is only good for a window of 30-60 minutes.
