i desoldered this flash a while back to map out the testpoints (https://lab.whitequark.org/notes/2018-09-17/game-boy-advance-cartridge-smc805-2/ …) and i just reballed it and soldered it back and it worked basically the first time. (i had to heat it up the second time because my flux gel is a very gnarly, very not bga ooze)pic.twitter.com/qL3EGPBAGF

until now, the only thing that prevented me from disassembling and reverse-engineering literally everything i meet was that i couldn't put anything with bgas back. now... now i am unstoppable!! INFINITE POWER HAHAHA

I would love to know if you've built up your own work station to do this sort of thing and if so what that looks like... I'm in awe.

i literally only used a silicone mat, a cheap noname soldering station with a Hakko T12-K cartridge for cleaning the balls, a stencil with some random chips to make it flatter, a cheap noname hot air gun, RMA in EtOH flux and RMA flux gel to do this

Wow! It seems so fancy. I assumed a reflow oven or something!

haha no you don't use reflow ovens for bga rework. and for assembly... well... i use a simple vapor phase soldering station of my own design

ha, yeah, i wish things were as convenient for me sometimes. recently i've had to work with a connector that had like a 0.3 mm pitch...
