i can't imagine tasting cat food but to be fair i wouldn't taste the vast majority of human food either so it's probably me who is weird here their methodology is interesting. what the hell is "methionine taste" thoughpic.twitter.com/CCvKu9bQvN

My Chinese colleague taste our cats food and treats on occasion. Mostly when we try a new brand or a new flavour. I'm told cats normally like their food a little saltier than humans typically do.

hm i thought cats don't have very good kidneys and thus should avoid salty foods. i'm not a cat nutrition expert or anything though

I thought it was their poor sense of thirst that lead to bad kidneys. I can't find any references for that, so it's probably hearsay.

afaik that's the other way around. their kidneys work very hard to avoid water loss to let them get all necessary water from meat, which makes them susceptible to all sorts of damage kidney failure is a common cause of death

Okay, thanks for the info. I knew many felines had problems with the kidneys, but didn't know what was going on with that. More fresh water for her bowl!

I don't think that's a very good way, considering what my cat seems to find tasty.

i think the idea is to figure out how humans call what cats like and go from there

I get it, but that assume that cats have different preference, rather than different habilities in tasting. I doubt it is the case.

yeah but how would you rank it on a scale from 1 to 10 on "grittiness" and "methionine"

Methionine is like bitter and seafood. That actually is a good description of the taste of cat kibble :(

The worst part is that whatever coating they put on it stuck around in my mouth and on my breath even after rinsing and well, I think I'll leave the kibble to the cats from now on.

the idea is to map it from humans to cats so you can have quicker development cycles

"Methionine" is one of the two sulfur containing essential amino acids. The usage as a scale for taste is news to me, too. I can only guess that this might work similar to sodium glutamate binding to the receptors in the "umami" taste buds.
