today i walked for about 1 km. after that, i was gasping for air, didn't feel my legs, had tunnel vision, nearly lost balance, and was simultaneously freezing and sweating. i love antidepressants. sincerely. anxiety before clomipramine was way worse than its side effects

see, the thing is, modern medicine works surprisingly well, considering how little we actually understand ourselves, as a species. even psychiatry! but a lot of doctors do medicine a disservice through futile attempts to practice it https://twitter.com/YaBoyYaqub/status/1043933422257750016 …

I think, though often it is really due to incompetence and/or feeling of self importance, sometimes doctors almost have to lie because otherwise patients refuse to take drugs they need. Whether it is morally acceptable or not do decide for others, is another question altogether.
-
I'm telling that from my own experience: when I've been to mental institution, some people reacted to the explanations about bad side effects... well, pretty violently
-
revolutionary idea here: those people have a point
-
True when these people are not posing much higher than average danger to themselves and others.
-
revolutionary idea number two: no one has a moral right (or an obligation) to prevent another human being from self-harm
-
From harm to others though?..
-
i don't dispute that, but ethics of involuntary hospitalization and treatment in *that* case are way too complex to discuss on twitter
-
Agree. Just wanted to point out that in many cases (mis)information psychiatrists give doesn't result from "power trips", and isn't that easy a question either.

incompentence/ignorance can't explain it? also, wow, that are quite the side effects.
-
some of it is incompetence, but a lot is believing that you know everything and your patient is a complete idiot, which is in many ways even worse. incompetence can be rectified
