today i walked for about 1 km. after that, i was gasping for air, didn't feel my legs, had tunnel vision, nearly lost balance, and was simultaneously freezing and sweating. i love antidepressants. sincerely. anxiety before clomipramine was way worse than its side effects

relevance here is that someone reminded me earlier that apparently some doctors claim that antidepressants are harmless. well, no. you get side effects unconditionally (they vary; clomipramine is one of the worst ones) but whether you get anything useful is more of a dice roll

it's really depressing how many people calling themselves medical professionals consider it acceptable to lie for no reason at all. also how many are there just for the power trip. you'd think the field would have some ethical standards

see, the thing is, modern medicine works surprisingly well, considering how little we actually understand ourselves, as a species. even psychiatry! but a lot of doctors do medicine a disservice through futile attempts to practice it https://twitter.com/YaBoyYaqub/status/1043933422257750016 …

I've seen some that make blood pressure drop while climbing stairs. Fainting + stairs = bad time :(

Any idea what the mechanism might be? I find it odd that not everyone experiences it.

these are all anticholinergic side effects. really fucks up your autonomous nervous system. as for not everyone experiencing it, well, no drug ever works exactly the same on two different people

Oof, yeah, clomipramine is one of the dirtier ones. Surprised (but happy) it works for your anxiety - I had only heard of it in the context of OCD (as being a fairly potent serotonin reuptake inhibiter) but even for that it's a mixed bag (paradoxical effects anyone?)

Neuropsychologist explained once that while ssri's and tca's can effectively be a "cure" for depression, they're not great with anxiety, and anti anxiety meds (benzos, etc) are more of a stop gap measure to get to CBT ideally, since they can make things worse thru conditioning...

please take me to the planet where ssris (or tcas) are a cure for depression, that place sounds nice

I know, right? Obviously a ton of asterisks after that statement, more like "we think they approach the mechanism of illness fairly directly, but because we don't know either the mechanism of action nor illness precisely, it's still a SWAG.

Photosensitivity is a common side effect of brain chemical drugs too. I got a sunburn waiting for a lyft and had to go off lamictal because the sunburn became a rash on my face

One thing we’ve discovered about lamotrigine is that it’s metabolization is induced by estradiol, so serum levels can drop by 50-60% on high-estradiol days

It, tegretol, and trileptal all negate hormonal BC (unless applied directly to the girl parts). It's super shitty. Keep that in mind too. Docs don't tell you that

And by directly, I mean your only option outside of the copper cross is Mirena. Both are horribly painful and invasive procedures. Yay, modern medicine. "It's just a pinch" is such BS.
