rather sterilized you instead of giving you a subdermal contraceptive implant ("docility is considered an advantage in pets", bleh, so no one cares enough to market these for cats) you probably wouldn't do that

you can literally just use the same subdermal levonorgestrel or etonogestrel implants they use for humans ("Nexplanon" etc) for cats, they're safe, effective, reversible, and don't cause major behavioral changes other than inhibiting estrus why the hell no one does??

(progestins work on male cats just as well. i mean, progestins work on male *humans* just as well, but they cause erectile dysfunction, so for some reason they don't sell like hotcakes. with that caveat, male oral contraceptives already exist and work)

well i guess the answer is "nexplanon is $230 per implant [works a few years. designed for five but cat metabolism is different] and not covered by insurance, and sterilization is cheaper and everyone does it" but this answer fuckin sucks

Most shelters won't let you adopt a cat that isn't sterilized in the US. I think that we used to have a big problem with accidental breeding followed by kitten neglect and Something Had To Be Done? Something like that.

these programs *are* better than the alternative (cat overpopulation isn't exactly good for anyone involved), i'm talking about pet cats here.
