they say cats are playful when young and then aren't, "can't teach old [cat] new tricks", etc. but this isn't true when said about people, you can do a PhD at 80 if capitalism hasn't succeeded in draining all your life. on the other hand, if no one ever taught you anything but…

rather sterilized you instead of giving you a subdermal contraceptive implant ("docility is considered an advantage in pets", bleh, so no one cares enough to market these for cats) you probably wouldn't do that

you can literally just use the same subdermal levonorgestrel or etonogestrel implants they use for humans ("Nexplanon" etc) for cats, they're safe, effective, reversible, and don't cause major behavioral changes other than inhibiting estrus why the hell no one does??

(progestins work on male cats just as well. i mean, progestins work on male *humans* just as well, but they cause erectile dysfunction, so for some reason they don't sell like hotcakes. with that caveat, male oral contraceptives already exist and work)

so they work about as well on men as they do on women then. (only very slightly /s. tbh if those were my only options I’d rather be spayed.)

it really depends on the person, but, *yes*, I have considered actually sterilizing the cat and then giving her HRT, but progestin implants seem better, given that they already exist in required dosages and it's a once every few years thing and not every day/biweekly thing

the cat is probably fine, I just have a particularly bad reaction to progestin. you’d notice if she stopped eating. (the fact that “food turning to ash in your mouth” is a real thing that you can just switch on with a pill fucked me up so bad. i can live without sex. but food?)
