this cat likes to play fetch. and I don't mean she brings things back sometimes; every single time I throw a toy, if she can find it at all, she'll bring it within my reach. sometimes push towards me with a lil' grabby paw. meows if i'm not paying attention. #catcognition

same cat has repeatedly demonstrated lifting a small glass vial with both front paws and lifting it to try and grab with teeth (unsuccessfully, it wasn't very grabby). also lifting it with a single claw by the cap meanwhile, our other cat eats cardboard

"cat toy doesn't work very well (firmware problem)" is an extremely 2018 problemhttps://twitter.com/awygle/status/1043201167050698752 …

something like a roomba mouse that scurries away maybe

I mean, I could literally just get mice. but it's still too primitive! a variation on the same basic concept. i can't believe this is the peak of cat happiness, endlessly chasing the same mouse over and over

I bought https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SQXVF7A/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 … which my cats love but it doesn't work very well (firmware problem). I also have fastened one of those fishing rod toys to the Roomba a few times which seemed to go OK.
-
clearly you need to reverse-engineer it and fix the firmware

i'm not sure, food-based games feel a bit close to some sort of deliberate conditioning to me. but i'll think about it.

I wonder if a good approach is to design something with inherently simple rules and a tactile mechanic, but where the actual path changes or can be changed in a fairly versatile manner. Similar to how a side-scroller gets most of its complexity from the map rather than mechanics.
