so, it downloads firmware updates. over http. but don't worry, they're signed. with md5. but at least the signature is downloaded over https. with --no-check-certificate. but at least they actually verify the signa*dies*pic.twitter.com/96EbDXK3hi

Linksys you literally added ONE FEATURE over what's essentially stock openwrt and you managed to fuck up EVERY SINGLE THING you could possibly fuck up look at this thinghttps://gist.github.com/whitequark/f7ac76449d875133da0aa5a9cb97f6c6 …

incredible. i'm laughing hysterically right now because i don't want to believe this is real production fw. why is it that every time i try to do things like "use thunderbolt" or "help a friend with a router" i accidentally unerath some eldritch ambomination

[ -z "get_md5" ] always fails though (missing a $) so maybe the checksum really is validated?

I kind of like how when md5 validation fails, the script writes 'failed' to a text file and the proceeds to apply the update anyway? There's no early exit anywhere. Unless the sysupgrade command checks the contents of that text file in /tmp?

I don't think the sysupgrade command checks it

Incredible. It's like someone got it working in the "dev environment with self-signed certs" and then said "Fuck it, merge to prod and release it!"

this is why you can never allow your developers to work with self-signed certs even for a god damned second, they can't be trustedhttps://pypi.org/project/lancer/

NIST SP800-131a mentions permissible use of md5 exactly zero times, of course.

Apropos. Just last week had to explain to a developer that hashing != signing. I don't know where that idea comes from.
