At the moment it’s in a fire proof safe at local Apple store. Waiting on next steps.

As a certified Apple tech I also would concur that this is most likely from a third party charger. I have NEVER seen this happen on a running unit. Literally after doing thousands of repairs on various models
-
Apple charger.
-
Also, there is a great possibility of data recovery very if you can get the drive back or the whole unit if you had no backup.
-
yeah, hoping to do that - but not optimistic. consensus seems to be that it'll be off in some lab in Cupertino by now

Hey, any updates? Which model is that? Can’t tell. Glad you’re OK.
-
Latest from Apple is that they've "escalated" my concern and I should hear something within 5 days, which, frankly, is unacceptable. It's a 2015 Retina 15" Pro.
-
5 days to investigate how your laptop exploded is unacceptable?
-
walk into Apple store with sunk power button on iPhone - walk out with new iPhone. walk into an Apple store with laptop that exploded, burned floors & spewed toxic fumes - walk out with 'we'll get back to you after five days, SOL if you don't have another computer'? unacceptable.
-
Surely you know the difference there... one is way easier to diagnose than the other. While I am fairly certain you didn't set this on fire, you wouldn't be the first person to set their laptop on fire to get it fixed for free and try to pin it on Apple. They'll make it right

jesus dude, that's awful glad it wasn't on your lap
-
It was actually — started pouring out smoke and I got it on floor before it blew.

(This is not an accusation, but a genuine question.) Any modifications to the device during its lifespan? Battery replacement, third party repairs, etc? Hope Apple fixes this!
-
trackpad was replaced and display was replaced, both by Apple under warranty. no third party involvement.
-
Lol, says a lot about Apple's quality nowadays when random question about servicing the MacBook reveals that it was already fixed twice because it failed during warranty period... I guess MacBook users treat it as normal thing though (until it catches fire).
