That “slang” is slang I use. It’s slang white people use and have co-opted from Black people. So you’re saying that we don’t matter, that it’s not worth it to have our stories told—so beautifully and complexly as Ibi does—by members of our own community.

There are SO many teens I know of who would LOVE a book like PRIDE. So many like me who adore Jane Austen or who need a more real and relatable way into Austen’s work need a book like this reflecting their experiences. Smh. I’m so tired of this mess. Read Ibi’s thread.

I've read some similar reviews and honestly they reminded me to how incredible The Hate U Give was, which makes me want to read this book ASAP. Slang makes the characters real and not pretentious characters for whitewashed readers.

Well… I’m disgusted by that “review.” The WSJ can go and fuck right off with that bullshit.

The hubris and condescending tone of these kinds of New York reviews are stale and out of touch. Who are these people? Self proclaimed aristocracy. "Let them eat cake." Well, we will. Thank you. Make mine chocolate fudge with cream cheese frosting, if you please.

the use of “limit” is also revealing here. let’s (wrongly) assume only readers who use “slang” themselves could possibly ever enjoy the book. that’s still ~not~ a limited amount of readers.

also I love specificity. writing to an audience of everyone? neither possible nor productive. my favorite reads either feel like they were written just for me, or force me to stretch my empathy muscles by reading as though they were written just for me
