My howto documents always end up like "Look, here are guidelines. They're wrong sometimes. Think about the other humans and make appropriate life choices. When in doubt, be kind. Ok bye."

There’s got to be one of those named paradoxes where the more precise some language attempts to be the more ambiguity it generates as people start to focus on the minute aspects of phrase/tense/omissions/whatever

They don't teach cop on in schools any more. And, common sense can also be only things within the set of actions you're not terrified to take. Otherwise you wouldn't be agonising over the manual :-)

I think the most important part is buy-in. I've been that person who created process docs only for them to be received with indifference. I don't know many corp. cultures that do it right but I'd love to see whole teams interested, checking the docs regularly, and participating.

I Agree! Inter-team dynamics form an important context that guidelines or standards or policy documents exist in. If the default stance is adversarial, you get a different set of failure modes for these documents than if the default stance is cooperative.https://twitter.com/whereistanya/status/1220750240942362625 …

I like this idea! We can work to shift culture within the documents themselves with little reminders like these.https://twitter.com/whereistanya/status/1220750797404803074 …
