The constitutional amendment ending slavery was approved by the House in 1865, sending it to the states for ratification. The president’s signature was not required, but felt it was so important that he signed anyway. This copy belongs to the ALPLM.

China insisted that President Richard Nixon be invited to the White House for the visit of Chinese Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping, in 1979. Nixon attended the State Dinner and shared a laugh with President Carter and translator Ji Chaozhu. Photo, NAID 183213

President Richard Nixon laughs with Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping as he shakes his hand. Jimmy Carter, translator Ji Chaozhu, also laugh, at the State Dinner for Deng Xiaoping. Carter and Nixon are in black tie, Ji and Deng are in black button-down shirts with the buttons closed at the neck. Ji holds a beer, Deng an orange juice, what's in Carter's glass is obscured.

Such sad news—Cloris was insanely talented. She could make you laugh or cry at the drop of a hat. Always such a pleasure to have on set. Every time I hear a horse whinny I will forever think of Cloris’ unforgettable Frau Blücher. She is irreplaceable, and will be greatly missed.

A fun article on every president's dancing skills, or lack thereof. For those of you who know about Grant's views towards music, his ranking won't be a surprise! , apparently we don't know much about President Garfield's dancing skills?

And a return to more tradition! The senior wire writer in the room, today it was called the briefing with a polite “thank you” which ends the briefing and not the press secretary choosing a mic drop moment.
