We have spent more on child summer camps this year than I have spent on camera equipment… barely. Look for a badass livestream with coming this Tuesday at 6PM PST, right here on this Twitter feed.

Sounds like an important role. In 1961 a consortium of 10 utilities banded together with a govt PPP to build Yankee Rowe, the first (mostly) utility-funded PWR after the government-funded Shippingport demo. Today's analogous path will enable extra-performance new reactors.

In the 1970s, Westinghouse and NN Shipyard formed a JV to mass-produce gigawatt-class reactors that float. This solves the main cost drivers of new and could at massive scale rapidly. After vast study, the NRC approved making of 8!

When announced that cost effective nuclear fission reactors was his runner up next project, I was inspired to summarize the cost drivers of fission and highlight our understanding of how to solve the problem:

Yeah come join us! and the inspired this event. We will talk advanced reactors (including everyone's favorite: thorium), reactor development history, and the ongoing quest for deep decarbonization

It's hard to put the real energy situation in context. This doesn't include any future climate change effects.

New page on economics of nuclear is up. Turns out, there's some good consensus about what's needed to improve nuclear economics.

Ever want to operate a nuclear reactor live, through your web browser? Well now you can! (well kind of, this is a kinetics solver that doesn't have plant feedback or anything... for now)

How did people do CFD before big computers? They cut out shapes in plexiglass and put in a Milling-Yellow solution which exhibits an optical property called "flow double refraction". This causes interference due to viscous stresses.

Between 1955 and 1960 the US govt entered into more than 10 partnerships to deploy the reactors most likely to be economical. They built an organic cooled in OH, sodium/graphite in NE, a superheat BWR in Puerto Rico. Gas cooled in PA. So cool!

Check out the grid plate of the Hallam sodium-graphite reactor, built in Nebraska as part of the US Power Reactor Demonstration Program. Read about it and so much more of the early quest for economical nuclear power:

At a rally in Germany, protesting the closure of the Philippsburg power plant, explaining the people why they ought to be angry! Thanks to and for setting this up and inviting me over!

Ready to fight for Philippsburg low carbon energy source, which produces as much energy as almost all danish wind turbines. It will be scrapped prematurely on 31st Dec.

Cosmic rays have been raining down on Earth 24/7 for all of eternity. I love this depiction of them from the NASA APOD, 2006 by Simon Swordy.

It probably shouldn't surprise me that the word isn't in this article. Carbon-free direct mass-to-energy conversion powered the NS Savannah merchant ship, and powers a single operational cargo ship in the Arctic Ocean today. It's hard to run low on cooling water at sea!

Lots of enlightenment in 's 1981 book: "Power Plant Cost Escalation". Power through the "tone" of the first few chapters and it really blossoms with great info. Highly recommended as we work on nuclear cost issues today! Free PDF available here:
