Without reading white papers on either, doesn’t @what3words suffer from inability to locate without lookup? This google one suggests to me that location could be algorithmically computed, offline if needs be?

Oh, I get that - big fan of the concept btw - but would I not need the entire DB to query locally? Like, I can't look at three words and guess it's approx location because two words, in the same position, are the same? Or can I? :) As I say, not read into the underlying tech :)

Thank you! The answer is no, you wouldn't be able to guess approximate location because the system isn't hierarchical. The reason we've done that is to avoid mistakes. If similar addresses are close to each other it's easy to mix them up and would reduce the system's accuracy.
