/10 What3words is based on your GPS location. GPS is an international system - and to clarify a common misconception: You do NOT need WiFi or Cellular connection for your smartphone GPS to work.https://www.smartertravel.com/use-phone-gps-without-data/ …

/10 If you have a cellular or WiFi signal it is easy to share your location with others through smart phone apps. Messages, Google maps, WhatsApp, Find my friends etc. Eg for the IOS messages apppic.twitter.com/CDRioi8fAr

/10 To help in an emergency situation, you can also set your phone to auto call the emergency services and share your location. Eg on IOS open the Settings and search for Emegency SOS.pic.twitter.com/P1qt6Mj9kF

/10 If you don’t have a cellular or WiFi connection you will have to rely on someone with you to go and get help. That’s the same with what3words. If your helper has a phone they can simply screen shot their location. Eg on IOS the Compass app shows your GPSpic.twitter.com/7rtihX6vbh

/10 If you only have one phone - and the person getting help doesn’t - then I accept it is easier to look up and remember 3 words than to remember your GPS. And then hope the person you meet has the app. I’d suggest write down the GPS also - just in case. 😉

/10 It’s surprising how many people do not know how easy and useful it can be to share your location by smartphone if needed. Also how to help set up emergency SOS services for their fiends and relatives. It can be life saving...

/10 I do not want to disparage what3words in writing this thread. It is well intentioned albeit with an underlying business model. My intention is to show there are other ways we can share our location that can as or more helpful, and can also save lives.pic.twitter.com/iGqKGS1a22

/10 Apologies for using mainly IOS examples. Android devices and the Google services I mentioned have similar capabilities. There are also many other apps that support these services. Please post any of help below.pic.twitter.com/81UxJvIBOt

Linking threads. It is important to be aware of the international AML standard that automatically sends the location to emergency services for emergency calls. Only 30% of police services use this. Why is that?https://twitter.com/rhidianb/status/1164767357757087744?s=21 …

Did you know Android and Apple phones automatically send the geolocation of the caller on 999 calls? It’s called AML. Most UK ambulance & fire services use it but only 30% police services. Why is that? @WestYorksPolice @LincsRuralCop https://eena.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2019_07_17_AML_Report_Card_Update.pdf … pic.twitter.com/zzFr90lbi3
