For all those @what3words cheer leaders. You don’t need to download an app to send your 3 word location to emergency services, just dial 999 and it will happen without a data connection But hey ho, keep burning the investors moneyhttps://twitter.com/edparsons/status/1162376705492885504 …

Hi Andy the location is passed to BT in a few seconds automatically when the users dials 999 works for both iOS and Android the android implementation is described here https://crisisresponse.google/emergencylocationservice/how-it-works/ … has been live in the UK for over a year

A great system however, from the story, it mustn’t have worked as the caller was directed to download @what3words and quote their location. @what3words certainly has its place and is an amazing address system where ‘traditional’ addresses are totally impossible

A simple workaround is a text message containing a link to a very basic webpage that uses geolocation to provide the w3w address server side. I have built this so know it works and is crazy good on a crap connection 🙃

That still relies on a data connection to follow the link, not SMS The emergency services call centre should be using the SMS location capability that is embedded within iOS & Android not relying on a proxy
