So apparently this is a thing: spotted in a London Tesco, a theft deterrent system that sprays the thief with synthetic DNA for later identification by DNA sequencing. Feels like something from a @GreatDismal novel.pic.twitter.com/FONoT1Wqgg

So when does it come out in the news that police have been purposely tagging incorrect targets in riots/protests for malicious reasons

Over the last few years I've been tagging all kinds of targets for a bunch of reasons...🤠 Also, how long before protesters have a DNA PARTY before every action?

Probably just a deterrent for thieves spooked by ^science^. An indelible dye would last longer and be somewhat more obvious to beat cops.

DNA detection is *extremely* specific and requires only minute amounts. The version sold here in Oz lasts up to 6 weeks and also has UV dye for initial detection by cops.

In the UK it's normally a quantum dot suspension that's fluorescent forever and very hard to wash off. They tend to be made of toxic cadmium selenide, though.

This is really sad that our response to people stealing food is to work on "crime technology" rather than looking at class inequality that led to the "crime".

You do realise that Tesco sells a lot more than food, don't you? And that those systems are not installed where the public should be.

Knowing how many times I've heard anti-shoplifting tag detectors go off without cause or because one wasnt removed at the cashier, what's the over/under on these regularly spraying innocents?

I always figured this would be "smart dust" with tiny RFID dots to track you around. This is way creepier and gross, while still being totally dystopian.
