Yeah this is my feeling too. I have seen reference to DNS based validation. Maybe that's a better option.

My workflow is to use the doctl integration, which lets me validate any domains I manage through DigitalOcean. It essentially let's me run a script on my laptop to get a new cert, and then I just deploy it to my droplet. It's really nice, but only for DigitalOcean setups.

Can that be automated with Ansible? Docs say certonly, "will allow you **interactively** select the plugin and options used to obtain your certificate".

I use one of the alternative shell clients, which only writes to a file under /.well-known/ and the cert itself. Much easier to integrate into a regular CM run, no sticky fingers all through my business, etc.
