You can manually set a different default DPI for Xorg creating a .Xresources file with something like "Xft.dpi: 115" (this is the value I'm using here, you should try a few to find which one looks better for you).

Correct me if I'm wrong but that doesn't scale images properly does it? I.e they're either original size (too small) or scaled up (blurry). I'm currently using GNOME, which gets this right but I like the idea of building a more minmal set up.

Try manually setting Xft.dpi in your ~/. Xresources, then source it with xrdb using your xinitrc. I use this trick on my retina MacBook pro.
