Two reasons: 1. Linux kernel becoming consistently unstable (my personal opinion) 2. portage complaining about blocking packages and myriad issues to be resolved manually (more and more often) 3. noticeable increase of hybrid licenses in ACCEPT_LICENSE file

I wanted something new and source based with an option to use binary packages. I just got fed up with wasting time resolving nonsensical issues. I still like Gentoo but Linux kernel is something I started to loathe.
