Nup, only thing that might interfere is Firefox's built in tracking protection but I use that on the machines that are fine too (and there's nothing in JS console about relevant requests being blocked).

That took 3 attempts to send. In Firefox I can see the pre-flight requests failing, which causes the actual request to fail. Just tried Epiphany and it shows this error...pic.twitter.com/abc4DzKCMe

I'm pretty confident they do. I think something is messing up the connection. Epiphany shows other errors too. I might need to try Chromium, its web inspector is better. If I copy as cURL a failed request from Firefox or Epiphany and run it on the command line it works…

Yeah could be some weird mix of browser + os not being happy.

Except that it's happening on two browsers (Firefox, Epiphany) and two OSes (elementary 5.3.0 kernel, GNU libc, Void Linux 5.4 kernel musl libc) now. I suppose I could try a 4.19 kernel.

What about something much more mainstream like Ubuntu or Debian?

I assume you’ve googled it, a lot of people seem to be seeing it with mail and evolution, few fixes out there, but not sure they would translate to web requests

Yeah I searched. The consensus seemed to be HTTP responses being sent to a TLS connection... I'm not sure how that would be happening in this case though. Might need to get lower level use Wireshark or something.
