Using a laptop that is sometimes connected to an external display with Awesome is killing me. Runtime errors from awesome, external display not working somethings, display manager (lightdm) crashes taking out the whole session blaaargh

apart from being curious how to build gnome from source. I actually wouldn't mind compiling the miniature version - only module I care for example. And I still can't get DisplayLink dock to play nicely with debian9/gnome3, which maybe gnome dependent ..?

I've been using i3wm in my laptop usually connected to an external monitor and it works great, personally I don't see any reason to go back to Gnome.
