I think I’ll try GNOME with PaperWM. I tried KDE on this laptop on the weekend and no windows would show up!? There were entries in the task bar but no visible windows.
Using a laptop that is sometimes connected to an external display with Awesome is killing me. Runtime errors from awesome, external display not working somethings, display manager (lightdm) crashes taking out the whole session blaaargh

At home, with just one external screen and no dock, I don't have any particular issue ... Maybe it's the lightdm that bring the session down ? Any particular log ?
-
Yes it’s definitely lightdm killing the session. Awesome throws runtime errors. It doesn’t crash though.

i3 tends to work fairly well for this for me, not sure if i3 is missing any features from AwesomeWM you use though

I'm using awesome with two external screens , no lightdm or any {k,X,g}dm, I just prefer to use startx and I don't have any issue of crashing. I just have to reconfigure it when I put it back on the dock station. That's my work configuration.

For a stable, if "confusing and chaotic" (per the docs) multi-head setup, there's always xmonad!
-
I second xmonad for multi display and overall. I use it on laptop and stationary. (Un-)plug laptop displays a lot. No crashes at all. Fast. Minimal etc.

I’ve had display issues on Linux for the last couple of weeks. Especially when working with video. My Mac dev machines are stable. (Using plain Ubuntu).
