It’s something I’ve pondered recently. There’s seems to be lots of effort going into things like flatpak, app image etc that seem mostly a mechanism to circumvent out of date packages.
I have mixed feelings about this. Yes, the nvidia driver can be a nightmare but the issues with needing newer versions seems like an Ubuntu problem not a Linux problem. Seems it would be better to innovate on allowing fearless software updates and then aggressively update everything. If rollback is easy like with FreeBSD boot environments or Nix atomic updates and rollback if something breaks you rollback and carry on.
