I write Go in the "bad" style. And guess what, I still understand code I wrote years ago! This talk has some good ideas, but single letter variables are surely not one of these.

If those were all variables used more broadly, and not just within the small for loop (i) or the 13-line function (b and count) then more descriptive names would be needed. There aren’t any other counts though, and the function is already named runeCount. Same goes with b and i.

That’s the philosophy at least. I’d personally maybe call it buffer or buf but that’s splitting hairs. The further away something gets used from its definition the more descriptive it should be. Ideally it’s all nice and small functions like that, in a perfect world of course!
