Center for Imagination in the Borderlands is hosting the first of many Matakyev Research Residencies in our desert. More about the word "matakyev" is below. Next week we will gather in O'odham land in an unbuilt conversation about "surveillance & sensuality."

Sometimes you read an academic book and you know the author is extremely online, that they had twitter open on one screen while writing in a different one. It’s like, oh yeah I recognize all these examples from my own timeline.

Every queer writer and writer of color knows this isnt true. I've had bullets mailed to me. Images of Anders Breivik's white supremacist attack repeatedly sent to me. These things happen to me almost every time I write something for a general audience. Tell me again about America

Whose salary is actually supplemental income? Who grew up with overseas travel and summer homes? Whose spent more of their youth on a college campus than a community center? Who has to support their parents and siblings?

Academic twitter should ask themselves this: whose parents rent and whose parents own homes? Whose grandparents owned a house? Who subsidized the purchase of your house and your elite education? Whose parents own stocks and investment properties? Who grew up with a nanny?

In Black Fantastic Richard Iton contextualizes the global political economies through which black-politics-as-popular-culture are expressed and supplanted. The book is a clinic in how to sort through uneasy black creative processes that are tied to and explode race thinking.

Takeaway: Convos abt fashion/sustainability and ethics/fashion in general are undermined by 1) industry's vested interested in keeping supply chains convoluted & opaque and 2) scholarly bias that still sees fashion industry as unimportant object of study.
