I’m sure Wesley never turned in work late, for any reason, and definitely didn’t speak to a teacher to explain an emergency and got an extension, because that would be unethical and wrong. Right?

As a teacher, some of this does have merit. Grading practices that reward work habits/home situations and refusing late work without discussion of circumstance are unfair and don’t give students feedback on understanding but punish them for things out of their control.

Why not just say- take into account family situations that make doing homework difficult which may tend to differ based on race rather than “refuse the white gaze”?

I must remember to tell a fellow volunteer mediator I greatly respect, a black woman who aces her mediations &is insistent on starting on time, that she needs to keep her clients waiting to "refuse the white gaze." I can't wait for her "What bullshit is this?!" stare in response!
