Harvard refuses to renew appointment of first and only black faculty dean in deference to student protests over Sullivan's representation of an unpopular client and other nebulous complaints lodged against himhttps://www.thecrimson.com/article/2019/5/11/winthrop-faculty-deans-to-leave/ …

52 of Sullivan's Harvard Law School faculty colleagues signed an open letter in support of him, arguing that any pressure placed on Sullivan to resign would be inconsistent with a freedom that is fundamental to the university. https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/letters/2019/03/08/harvard-law-faculty-speak-support-resident-dean-representing-weinstein/okm55pW9aXOzbCkDXPDABN/story.html …pic.twitter.com/tXFTJlwuPE

Sullivan resisted the intense pressure to resign brought to bear against him and was eventually forcibly removed.

Paradigmatic 2019 story: coordinated release of nebulous complaints couched in the poisonously vague therapyspeak of "hostility" and "harm", surrounds an unpopular person - in this case Harvard's first and only black dean -- in a miasma of suspicion. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2019/5/10/winthrop-climate/?fbclid=IwAR03ENC-KeErP_X4Gym7ns4DS336mVutpQ3D_w-YlOa2PPUZpUNVRXhq5f4 …

This tweet does capture something important: the people who fall to these inquisitions tend to be people nobody likes and thus won’t defend: principles erode in this way until they are altogether gonehttps://twitter.com/josh_lipson/status/1127246836748759040?s=21 …

All due respect, read the exposé from yesterday. Not nebulous. He’s been running an intimidation culture for years. And as those of us who lived Winthrop have always known, they never gave a shit about the role.

I did read the expose and it’s on the basis of that I concluded the charges were nebulous. The expose is a farrago of insinuation with no actual underlying fact pattern that justifies the alleged atmosphere of fear.

It’s true that it’s people whom nobody likes that end up with no defenders and this often tips the balance when matters of principle are at stake — he reason the latter are so readily sacrificed

He hasn’t been fired from the university, he just lost his dorm dean post. The only purpose of the job is to be popular among students!

A great way to ensure you remain popular with students is never to do anything controversial.

I understand that if the role really is just to be amiable then it might not be consistent with a side career as crusading legal defender. But he himself and many others have maintained that the role is not reducible to that

The expose establishes that he had detractors; whether that means he was actually unpopular is unclear. Let's say that he was beloved by all students and staff, but the protests still happen: does Harvard renew his contract, acting on the principles invoked by 52 colleagues?
