We just wrapped up a nice set of perf improvements for . Should help those with large codebases. Nearly all of it was deep in the guts of the compiler itself. Next available VS 16.5 preview will have all the fixes:

This. Is. So. Cool. "the metadata bits are put in the middle of the pointer, just above the bits that point into the heap itself. Then the heap is mapped into the address space multiple times, once for each combination of the metadata bits."

I had intended to bring my laptop with me on vacation but accidentally left it back in the US. So far it's been a great way to completely unwind but we'll see if I go crazy by the end of the week 😂

In Rust 1.41 (January 30th), we'll be able to compile dependencies with a different optimization level than the main code. 🎉

Publishing benchmarks like this just encourages language runtimes to not do important things like set up stack guards, harming safety/security. It's irresponsible.

I wish people creating these things realized that all they're doing is creating make-work for compiler engineers, making them work on vanity metrics instead of actually useful features.

THIS IS SO COOL!!! Rustlings available as an EduTools plugin in IntelliJ/CLion! It looks way nicer, especially the hints in the sidebar instead of in comments at the bottom ;)

Finished reading by on database internals. This is an unusually in-depth and precise book on data structures and algorithms from a non-academic publisher, but extremely readable and compact. I feel like I learned a lot here efficiently.

We released patch 1.2 of today, and it includes a fix for the dreaded "the game thinks my companions are dead" bug, which I believe I spent more time investigating than I have for any other individual bug in my career (1/18)

Day 10: One more acronym which has been getting a lot of attention in distributed systems community is CRDTs: conflict-free replicated data types. In short, CRDTs help to build distributed systems that are more resilient and reliable:

A trap I see a lot of smart, “senior” folks fall into is that they think that practices that make a team more effective are bad because it slows them down individually. Software is a team sport. A team that works effectively together will do much more than a single person.

If you can’t work effectively with others, you’re not a senior engineer.
