question for hardware folks - is prototyping my own pcie boards viable? or is that a pipe dream?

Assembly would probably be the challenging part unless you've got tools for doing surface mount soldering I guess. I expect BGA components would be the most frustrating. But not insurmountable.

You could also just get adapters for everything and do it on a huge ass board I guess?

yeah, the default approach is usb through whatever microcontroller I wanna use 😅
