This is getting better in E2. The non-canon interpolations seem reasonable and in-spirit, and the timeline compression seems fine too.

I don't believe so, this takes place well after that but maybe some of the backstory they mention isn't right

I think so but that seems subjective to me. I'm sure some people have been piecing it together so much that they have a very clear idea.
