How did the heating element break in TWO places ... One I can imagine but...

apparently they get brittle over time and start to break, which means repairing it is usually a waste of time and needs a complete replacement

True, but like an oven or dryer filament I would expect it to fail in one place... That's not to say it doesn't happen though. Weird to say the least!

If the element breaks in one place and both sides of the break come in contact with that back plate, doesn't that provide continuity? It could get exciting with intermittent continuity due to the entire thing rotating.

yeah I don't understand why they wouldn't put some kind of insulating lacquer stuff on that, maybe it would just burn off anyway though from the high heat
