This is why I like electronics, you can usually trust a datasheet, especially if it's something a lot of people use, whereas software documentation is usually almost useless

Sometimes the documentation or what people tell you conflicts with what you're actually seeing:

very experienced person: "if you do X, Y will happen!"
reality: <does X> <Z happens instead>

When this happens, there are 2 options:
1. you made a mistake somewhere (95% of the time)
2. the information was wrong / outdated (5% of the time)

Verifying is important because outdated information can waste a LOT of your time if you assume it's true
