Well, it does look like X11 is most loved by those who have never touched its code, and hated by those who do.

My main interaction has been via XCB or tools like xdotool, which are both a pleasure to use. Of course sometimes they leak toxic fumes from the underlying x server implementation details, but you can clean it up usually
