1st. Purely got lucky that they found my GitHub profile interesting and I did well in the interview. 2. I worked with a CS prof (I was not a CS student) by volunteering for stuff at first (teaching kids programming) and he liked me (I guess it's kiiinda networking)

It’s becoming more common. As our languages evolve and the bar for entry becomes easier to self-teach. Those in hiring positions are understanding the value in someone who struggled through learning to become a full-fledge engineer.
