I really hope you guys will read this. I’ve been working on it a while. It really shows – in a sort of shocking microscopic way -- what inevitably happens when you incentivize criminalization of people for profit. (1/12)

ICYMI, or just couldn't handle reading such a sad story before the holidays.

📍Thread: I’ve spent much of this year looking at the 56,000+ people serving life without parole in the U.S. and why for @MarshallProj Louisiana is a big part of that story — it sentences people to LWOP at one of the highest rates in the U.S. themarshallproject.org/2021/12/16/her

Hope this article by fellow J97 classmate Bill Hughes sparks an effort 2 save historic theater. “Real estate is real estate, but this is the arts,” Battista said. “There ought to be some special attention paid when the city stands to lose a piece of cultural history like this.”

This story — think David Sedaris, with reporter interviewing elves “on background” because CTA won’t answer her questions for what was supposed to be a puff piece. Hilarious. Merry Christmas to all celebrating. If not, come join me 4 Chinese food & a movie tonight

I finally caught the damn CTA holiday train and wrote about it. It's a classic journalism story with a holiday twist. It's also my last story of the year and one of my favorites. Happy holidays and support local news! chicagoreader.com/news-politics/

This investigation by is chilling. It stirred more and more outrage with every graph, especially the fact that after the Peace Corps got the alleged perpetrator out of Tanzania so he could seemingly avoid criminal charges, his salary went up. 🙄

A Peace Corps worker drove after drinking, brought a sex worker to his government-leased home and killed a mother of three in a hit and run. The US helped him escape prosecution. usatoday.com/in-depth/news/

Louisiana has long relied on life without parole prison terms, leading the nation in such sentences. Virtually all murder convictions here carry a mandatory life without parole sentence. A short thread about Louisiana sentencing practices:

Robert Loggins and his mother were both subjected to dangerous restraints by police that led to their deaths. To learn more about their cases and the problem with prone-position restraints, listen in on tomorrow: trib.al/ecMU6Y5

I was the only reporter at the trial. That’s speaks volumes about the state of news media these days. I don’t understand Americans who don’t believe in and value a free press. It’s so essential to our democracy.

From @MarshallProj @MississippiCIR @JMitchellNews ‘Y’all going to kill me?’ Persuading police to stop using hogties and prone-position restraints has proved hard in small-town Mississippi. Robert Loggins died in 2018. His mother died in 2005. nbcnews.com/news/crime-cou
