The people who maintain inequality by exploiting labor have names. Say their names: Robert and Louis Loeb of Loeb Properties, the nephews of anti-union Mayor Henry Loeb. My latest, in the The New York Times

Quite literally, walked the halls at five hospitals looking for info on financial assistance. It wasn't there. Staff didn't have any info either. That's not what the law requires.

This parade of executives goes to show that diversity for diversity’s sake in corporate boardrooms means nothing if the end result is the continued enslavement of disenfranchised minorities and the poor to creditors, simply for wanting to stay alive. Can’t save a broken system.

Challenging institutions like (and the status quo) may not endear us to local donors/foundations, but I am glad , and saw fit to support and this work.

These are just some of ’s top executives. The hospital refused to make any of them available for interviews to explain why they file more debt lawsuits than all but one creditor in all of Shelby County. (And that credit is Midland Funding, which buys old debt.)

Methodist’s chief legal officer Monica Wharton, who I discreetly approached about this story a year ago. (She kinda blew me off, but hat’s another story for another day.)

The current CFO, Chuck Lane. His predecessor told me Lane “was over the revenue cycle for the last 7 to 8 years so he was directly overseeing the collection agency.” Oh yeah. owns its own collection agency. Isn’t that convenient?

This is Dr. Michael Ugwueke, the current president and CEO. These practices did not start on his watch, but they have continued.

You’ve seen the faces of the defendants harmed by debt collection practices, so it’s only fair to put faces on the hospital. Meet Gary Shorb, president/CEO from 2001-2016, during which time the hospital’s revenues nearly tripled.

ProPublica is big on showing your work - so here's how we know what we know about Methodist Healthcare's aggressive debt collection practices and how often they sue and garnish the wages OF THEIR OWN EMPLOYEES. (Stay tuned, tomorrow's story is a...

Oh, and the CA picked up the story too. Methodist Healthcare made $86M more than it spent last year, but is hounding the woman pictured, who makes $9/hour at Kroger.

Nonprofit hospitals' financial assistance policies must be in visible in public places, including emergency rooms. But when a reporter visited Methodist’s Shelby County ER’s, they weren’t. More on Methodist Healthcare. A MLK50 and ProPublica collabo.

The nonprofit is Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, which says on its website that its “committed to a culture of compassion.” Sigh.

Oh, the Guardian picked up our story too. This is a hospital affiliated with the United Methodist Church, fwiw.
