One of the most horrifying parts of this book is when Ellesberg reveals that there was no recall code for bombers in early Cold War. Despite crewed bombers taking hours to reach targets, no way to recall once the go code issued. 😬🤯😬https://twitter.com/stilgherrian/status/998040439700701184 …

So I'm going to be talking with Ellsberg next week, making some oral history documentation about things he mentions in the book. Which is to say, if you were going to ask him follow-up questions on the book, what would they be? I have my own interests, but I'm all ears.

Oh how delightful! I would def be interested in knowing exactly when mechanisms/procedures were put in place to recall bombers if an execute order had been issued. I’d be curious if he had thoughts on what effective arguments/points to raise in convo w/True Believers would be?

Does Ellsberg believe that another nuke is set to go off soon? Why or why not? In his experience, how can states move from nonproliferation to disarmament?

There’s an excellent review of the book by @Scottludlam here FYI - “Our governments built this. With our taxes. Dictatorships, communist republics and democracies alike. And now they need to be forced to unbuild it before, one day, it gets used.” https://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2018/april/1522501200/scott-ludlam/nuclear-brinkmanship-and-doomsday-scenario …

Does Ellsberg know about a review or program or exercise called Oregon Trail in the fifties or sixties? It was apparently an exercise that revealed the hopelessness of the tactical nukes/ pentonic division strategy and led to Air /Land battle. Please ask him.
