One other thing from this week: I got to have dinner and chat with Tsuyoshi Hasegawa, whose book is still my #1 recommendation to people interested in the politics of the end of WWII. Something I was surprised to learn: Hasegawa was born in Tokyo in 1941, and was evacuated to the countryside during the war. He says he can still remember when surrender happened: he saw adults crowded around the one radio in the village, crying. He looks far younger than he is!
